Choir of St. Ignatius Loyola
K. Scott Warren, conductor

There is nothing petite about this monumental mass setting, which Rossini wrote following a thirty-year self-imposed retirement from composing opera. It is a tour-de-force for chorus and soloists alike, and is one of the many reasons Rossini earned the respect of his dear friend Giuseppe Verdi. We present the piece in its original—and Rossini’s preferred—form: chamber choir accompanied by two pianos and harmonium, with four vocal soloists.

Choir of St. Ignatius Loyola
K. Scott Warren, conductor

Italian music excels at the grand and the intimate alike. Amidst a rich tapestry of musical styles and textures, we find the maestri Rossini and Verdi, masters of opera and other large forms, returning to the unaccompanied choir. Anchored by one of the great masses of Palestrina, the first half of this concert explores a seldom-encountered side of Rossini and Verdi with two sumptuous motets by each composer. We complete the evening with Ildebrando Pizetti’s luminous Requiem, composed in the early 1920’s.

Program
Rossini: Cantemus Domino
Rossini: O salutaris hostia
Palestrina: Missa Salve Regina
Verdi: Ave Maria & Lauda alla Vergine Maria (from Quattro pezzi sacri)

Choir and Orchestra of St. Ignatius Loyola
K. Scott Warren, conductor

We close our 31st season triumphantly with sensory overload in the form of Verdi’s Requiem, which is scored for four soloists, double choir, large orchestra, and offstage instrumental forces. At once consoling and utterly terrifying, this massive testament of spiritual gravitas premiered on May 22, 1874 at another San Marco, this one in Milan. It is fitting that this music will once again find a home within the grand Italian Baroque architecture of St. Ignatius Loyola.

Program
Giuseppe Verdi: Messa da Requiem
